Two year seven pupils at The Leigh UTC in Dartford are supporting front line workers during the
COVID-19 pandemic by making 3D printed face shields for their local community
Students Max Leachman and Harley Sands, who attend The Leigh UTC on Brunel Way, are putting their Engineering skills to work printing 3D print face shields at their homes. The face shields are being supplied for free, via 3 D Face Shields North Kent, to front line workers in nursing homes and care homes in Dartford and the surrounding areas.
Max Leachman, aged 12, said “I wanted to do my part to help those who are helping us all during this pandemic “
Harley Sands, aged 12, said, “I got involved to give protection to those people who needed shields to keep themselves safe, while doing their jobs helping others.”
The Leigh UTC’s 3D printers are also being utilised to support the project being coordinated by 3D Face Shields North Kent based in Dartford, to supply this vital equipment. To date the project has made over 4000 face masks and more help is being offered every day to support this initiative.
Stephen Leahey, Principal, The Leigh UTC, said, “The Leigh UTC is delighted to be supporting this initiative to provide 3D printed face shields for key workers in nursing homes and care homes within the local community. As soon as we were notified of the project the Engineering team had no hesitation in setting up the school’s 3D printers to print hundreds of the components for the shields. We are so proud to have seen so many amazing examples of our students supporting the community while the school is closed and I am delighted that Max and Harley are using their passion for Engineering to provide this vital PPE for front line workers.”
