Clacton Care Home Wins Climate Action Award

Edensor Care Home in Clacton-on-Sea is celebrating after winning the prestigious Climate Action Toward Net Zero award at The Prospers.

Owned by the charity Diagrama Foundation, the Edensor Care Home, which specialises in nursing and dementia care, was thrilled to win the Climate Action Toward Net Zero, at the Prosper Awards on Thursday 6 July at the Cressing Temple Barns near Witham. The Proper Awards celebrate the best of care in Essex and are open to all care providers who deliver a care service to adults in Essex County Council’s Local Authority area.

Sabina Mach, Manager, Edensor Care Home said, “We’re absolutely thrilled to receive this award, which underlines Edensor’s commitment to taking positive climate action. We are delighted that everyone plays their part and shares our commitment to making a positive difference and we are all, residents, families and staff working together towards net zero at Edensor.”

Changes that Edensor has made include, reducing their printing by 85% in the last 12 months, making care plans fully electronic, 90% of the lighting is now LED and automatically turns off when no one is in the area, all the windows are being replaced, a more energy efficient boiler and smart heaters have been installed with thermostatic valves to control temperatures in individual rooms, rain water is collected to water plants, furniture is usually donated and then upcycled by the Edensor team and staff and residents are encouraged to use public transport and cycle to work wherever possible.

David McGuire, Chief Executive, Diagrama Foundation said, “I am so proud of the team at Edensor for the steps they have taken towards making our care centre net zero. We recognise the critical need to reach UK government’s net zero targets and are taking significant steps to reduce our waste and be more climate aware. It is of critical importance to our organisation that we address the climate emergency and play our part in reducing waste and become more efficient. The steps we have taken over the past two years have changed the way we run our nursing home, but it’s just the beginning and we continue to involve our residents, their families and staff in our decisions. We are also working with the wider Clacton community to look at more  positive outcomes and have sought advice from a specialist organisation about reducing energy consumption, increasing efficiencies and seeing cost savings in order for us to do the best we possibly can, to play our part.”
